Dow advances on expectations for more stimulus programs

U.S. blue chips advanced on Thursday, as central banks started talks on new stimulus programs to boost the economic growth. The Dow Jones Index rose 0.4% to 14,606.11 points, despite disappointing data on the U.S. economy. Eight out nine sectors in the index increased with telecommunications and financials adding 1.1% and 0.9% for the two biggest increases on Dow. 24 out of 30 companies posted gains in their share prices. Hewlett-Packard Co surged 1.8% to $22.30 after the company's chairman Raymond Lane stepped down because of shareholders' dissatisfaction with the acquisition of Autonomy Corp. AT&T Inc. jumped 1.7% to $37.91, as the telecommunications operator launched a new smartphone in cooperation with Facebook and HTC. McDonald's Corp closed the top-three performers list with a 1.4% climb to end at $100.63. Meanwhile, Cisco Systems Inc. lost 0.7% to $21.04, pushing the technology sector into the red zone. IBM Corp and Alcoa Inc. declined as much as 0.6% to trade at $211.31 and $8.22, respectively.
