U.K. shares swing between gains and losses

U.K. equities fluctuated between gains and losses, while Cypriot lawmakers discussed the lax levy on bank deposits and U.S. housing starts beat the estimates. The FTSE 100 Index rose 0.02%, or 2.63 points, to 6,460.98 points by 16:48 in Frankfurt. Six out of ten groups in the benchmark gauge edged higher. BAE Systems Plc jumped 2.5% for the biggest rally in the index, as the aero and defense systems developer is searching for a new chairman to replace the existing one by May 2014. Furthermore, Severn Trent Plc was 1.9% up to trade at 1,6777 pence pacing gains in the utility group that added 0.4%. Vodafone Group lifted telecommunications for the biggest surge on Footsie, reaching its highest price in seven months. The operator jumped after Jefferies Group LLC raised its share-price target to 174 pence on possible merger between Vodafone and Verizon Communications Inc. Evraz Plc slipped the most by 5.11%.
