Dow caps longest winning streak since 1996

Most U.S. blue chips advanced on Wednesday, pushing the Dow Jones Industrial Average towards its longest winning streak since 1996 on better than expected retail sales data in February. The retail sales surged 1.1% in February, gaining for a fifth straight month and bolstering optimism over the nation's economy. The Dow Jones index closed at 14,455.28, up 5.22 points or 0.04%. Five out of nine groups in the gauge edged higher. International Business Machines Corp. rallied 0.72% to its record high price of $212.06, valuing the computer services provider at $236 billion. Boeing Co followed with a 0.7% rise to trigger a 0.03% increase in industrial shares. McDonald's Corp posted the third biggest gain of 0.6% on speculation the restaurant chain will start selling egg-white breakfast sandwich in the U.S. next month to bolster its sales. On the downside, Merck & Co that slid 1% to drag down health care shares by 0.4%. Coca-Cola Corporation retreated 0.95%, as Chinese authorities accused the company for illegal use of GPS device to access confidential information.
