US blue chips slide; financials cap losses

Dow closed slightly lower on Thursday after disappointing Eurozone's data. Limiting the downswing, US labour market numbers came better than expected. US jobless claims dropped to 341,000 last week, while Eurozone's GDP shrank 0.6% in Q4 of 2012, compared to a forecast of a 0.4% decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index edged lower 0.07% to close at 13,973.39. Only three in nine sectors included in the index finished in green territory. The top-performer was financial industry. Travelers Cos and American Express jumped 0.44% and 0.39% after Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital unveiled their plans to buy H.J. Heinz Company. At the same time, energy stocks were mixed. Chevron gained 0.16%, while Exxon Mobil Corp sagged 0.17% amid solid crude oil prices. Dragging the US blue chips index lower, telecommunications and consumer services retreated 0.40% and 0.42%. Verizon Communications and AT&T slumped 0.43% and 0.37%, while Wal-Mart Stores slid 0.80%.
