FTSE 100 Index fluctuated between gains and losses on Thursday amid Xstrata merger rumors and Unilever's plunge. Xstrata jumped 10% and Glencore rallied 6% on news about possible merge between both commodity firms. The gains were offset by Unilever PLC which posted small increase in its profit and gave cautious forecasts for 2012. AstraZeneca PLC and Royal Dutch Shell PLC each lost 3.7% and 2.4% respectively on lower than expected 4th quarter profit. At the moment of writing FTSE 100 is 0.01% or 0.36 points up at 5,790.90.
