Japanese stocks added to losses Wednesday on Greek political impasse.

The Nikkei 225 edged lower 1.12%, or 99.57 points, to 8,801.17. The broader Topix tumbled 1.14%, or 8.52, to 738.88.

"Risk aversion is rising, making it hard for investors to make a move through June while monitoring Greek political developments," said Hitoshi Asaoka, a Tokyo-based senior strategist at Mizuho Trust & Banking Co.

"Cyclical stocks sensitive to risk sentiment are leading losses."
