"There is no real pressure on the market, [investors] want to get the next couple of days out of the way"
- Mark Hodds, head of execution at Oriel Securities
U.K. stocks rose on Thursday on better-than-expected economic data from U.S. The benchmark FTSE 100 index gained 1.08%, or 59.37 points, to 5,566.77. The FTSE All-Share Index rose 0.98%, or 27.70 points, to 2,853.58.
"The U.S. data was OK, which has helped sentiment," said Trung-Tin Nguyen, a hedge fund manager at TTN AG in Zurich. "Moves are exaggerated with the light volumes."
Markit is to announce its purchasing managers' index on January 3. An index is based on a survey of about 600 purchasing managers who are asked to rate business conditions.
