According to the Office for National Statistics, retail sales volumes in Great Britain fell by 0.4% in February 2026, a correction following a sharp 2.0% rise in January. This monthly decline was largely attributed to consumers front-loading their spending in January to capitalize on discounts, as well as above-average rainfall dampening demand for household goods. Despite this monthly slip, the broader three-month trend remained positive, with sales volumes rising 0.7% compared to the previous period and 3.0% compared to February 2025.

Data highlights a divergence between sectors, as other non-food stores saw growth driven by strong commercial art sales, while supermarkets and clothing stores experienced pullbacks. Online retail continued to show resilience; online spending values rose by 0.6% over the month, increasing the digital share of total retail to 28.2%. Overall, while the sector has shown recent recovery, total retail volumes remain 0.3% below the pre-pandemic levels recorded in February 2020.
