U.S. Jobless Claims Signal Labor Market Strength

Source: Dukascopy Bank SA
U.S. Labor Department report shows a strong labor market. Weekly initial unemployment claims fell to 198,000 for the week ending January 10, the lowest four-week average since early 2024, while the insured unemployment rate held steady at 1.2% and the number of people receiving benefits declined.

Although unadjusted claims rose due to normal seasonal factors, the increase was smaller than expected. Some states saw higher claims tied to layoffs in construction, manufacturing, transportation and services, while others reported fewer job cuts. Overall, the data suggests layoffs remain limited and labor conditions are still healthy.
