Consumer Prices continues to rise

In July, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose by 0.2%, slightly lower than the 0.3% increase in June. Over the past 12 months, the overall CPI increased by 2.7%, the same rate as in June.



The main driver of the monthly increase was shelter, which rose by 0.2%. Food prices remained flat, with food at home falling 0.1% and food away from home rising 0.3%. Energy prices dropped 1.1%, led by a 2.2% decline in gasoline prices. The core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.3% in July, following a 0.2% increase in June. Notable increases were seen in medical care, airline fares, recreation, household furnishings, and used cars, while lodging away from home and communication declined. Over the past year, core CPI rose 3.1%, food prices increased 2.9%, and energy prices fell 1.6%.
