David Cameron, Prime Minister of the U.K., pledged to build a society based on aspiration in order to overcome the recession. During his speech to the Conservative Party conference on Wednesday, Cameron said economic recovery is taking longer than it was initially expected, while also mentioning the country is on the right track and austerity measures are working properly.
"My job - our job - is to make sure that in this 21st century, as in the centuries that came before, our country, Britain, is on the rise," said David Cameron, Prime Minister of the U.K.
"My mission from the day I became leader was … to show the Conservative party is for everyone, north or south, black or white, straight or gay."
"Unless we act, unless we take difficult decisions, unless we show determination and imagination, Britain may not be the force which it has been in the past. The truth is this we are in a global race today and that means an hour of reckoning for a country like ours – sink or swim, do or die."
The FTSE 100 Index declined by 0.58 per cent to 5,776.71. The broader FTSE All-Share Index tumbled 0.59 per cent to 3,017.76.
