Consumer Confidence in the U.S. lowers

US consumer confidence fell in January, with the Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® dropping 5.4 points to 104.1. December's reading was revised up to 109.5 but still showed a decline. The Present Situation Index, measuring current business and labor conditions, dropped 9.7 points, while the Expectations Index, reflecting outlooks on income, business, and jobs, fell 2.6 points but stayed above the 80 threshold usually signaling recession.



Confidence has remained stable but low since 2022, with younger consumers (under 55) experiencing the biggest decline, while those 55+ saw a slight increase. Higher-income households (over $125K) saw the sharpest drop, while lower-income households reported gains.
