UK stocks rose 0.14% on Friday to trade at 5,582.80 at the time of writing. UK equities were spurred by hopes that the ECB is preparing to purchase bonds of indebted member states. Barclays rose 7.32% as the bank reported a EUR2.9 billion profit, excluding changes in inventories and value of its stake in Sanofi-Aventis SA. The British bank also started to search a new management after Libor scandal. Meanwhile, mining stocks were mixed, with Antofagasta falling 1.23% and Xstrata rising 0.66%. Anglo American was the second biggest loser, falling 4.1%. The mining company announced a 46% drop in the first half profits, citing decline in commodity prices.
