Consumer Price Index at 2.8%

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased by 0.2% in February, following a 0.5% rise in January. Over the past year, the overall CPI increased by 2.8%. The shelter index rose 0.3% in February, contributing to nearly half of the monthly increase. This was offset by a 4.0% drop in airline fares and a 1.0% decline in gasoline prices. Despite the fall in gasoline prices, the energy index rose by 0.2%, driven by increases in electricity and natural gas prices. Food prices also increased by 0.2%, with the cost of dining out rising 0.4%, while the price of food at home stayed the same.
