Major stock indexes mixed as economic data inconclusive

Today two reports were released: one showed that U.S. retail sales rose 0.4% in June, less than expected, while other report said general business conditions index climbed unexpectedly from 7.80 to 9.50 in July, implying improving manufacturing activity. Main averages reacted differently on the data. The Dow gauge climbed less than 0.1%, the Nasdaq fell 0.1% ans S&P 500 decreased less than 0.1%.
