U.S. CPI Inflation Hits 3.8% in April 2026 as Energy and Gasoline Prices Surge

In April 2026, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 0.6% after increasing 0.9% in March. Over the past 12 months, overall inflation increased 3.8%.

Energy prices were the biggest factor behind the monthly increase, contributing more than 40% of the rise in overall inflation. The energy index climbed 3.8% in April and was up 17.9% from a year earlier. Gasoline prices rose sharply, increasing 5.4% during the month and 28.4% over the year. Fuel oil and electricity prices also increased, while natural gas prices edged slightly lower.



Food prices increased 0.5% in April and were up 3.2% over the previous 12 months. Grocery prices, measured by the food-at-home index, rose 0.7%, mainly because of higher prices for meats, poultry, fish, eggs, fruits, and vegetables. Prices for food away from home, such as restaurant meals, increased 0.2% in April and 3.6% over the year.

Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, increased 0.4% in April and 2.8% over the past year. Shelter costs rose 0.6% during the month and 3.3% annually. Prices also increased for household furnishings and operations, airline fares, personal care products, apparel, and education. Meanwhile, prices for new vehicles, communication services, and medical care declined in April.
