Retail sales in Germany gained more than expected

Destatis reported on Wednesday that Germany's retail sales grew more than expected in September. Retail sales advanced by 1.5% on a seasonally adjusted basis last month, compared to a revised down figure of 0.1% in the preceding month. Economists, however, expected a more moderate increase of 0.3%.

European stocks gain on German data

On Wednesday, European stocks were rising during European morning trading hours, extending yesterday's rally, after the release of data which showed an increase in German retail sales. The Euro Stoxx 50 climbed by 0.64%, French CAC 40 gained 0.58%, while German Dax 30 added 0.63%.

Consumer spending in France added less than expected

The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies reported on Wednesday that spending of French consumers rose less than it was expected in September. French consumer spending increased by 0.1% on a seasonally adjusted basis, compared to a 0.4% growth in the preceding month. Economists, however, expected a reading of 0.2%.
