U.S. Natural Gas Storage Falls

The latest report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows that U.S. natural gas storage declined significantly during the week ending February 27, 2026 as winter heating demand remained strong. Total working gas in storage fell to 1,886 Bcf (Billion Cubic Feet) after a withdrawal of 132 Bcf from the previous week, which represents about 6.5% of total inventories. Despite the large weekly drop, storage levels are still 115 Bcf, or 6.5%, higher than at the same time last year. However, inventories are slightly below the five-year average by about 43 Bcf, or 2.2%.



Most of the withdrawal came from the Midwest and East regions, which together made up more than 65% of the total draw. The Midwest fell by 44 Bcf to 397 Bcf and remains 16.2% below its five-year average. The East dropped by 42 Bcf to 322 Bcf and is 17% below its normal level. The South Central region also saw a large withdrawal of 41 Bcf, leaving inventories at 712 Bcf, about 6.6% below the five-year average.

In contrast, the western regions saw only small declines. The Mountain region fell by 3 Bcf to 198 Bcf and remains 53.5% above its five-year average, while the Pacific region declined by 2 Bcf to 257 Bcf and is still 46% above normal. Overall, although inventories dropped sharply this week, total U.S. natural gas storage remains within the typical five-year range, with tighter supplies in the East and Midwest and higher-than-normal stocks in the Mountain and Pacific regions.
