U.K. consumer confidence failed to improve in June, said GfK NOP Ltd. An index of sentiment remained unchanged at -29 points from the previous month.
"The stagnant level of consumer confidence suggests that the public is stuck in a period of constant depression, which it is finding very hard to snap out of," said Nick Moon, GfK Social Research managing director.
The index has been "at minus 29 or worse for an entire 12-month spell -- the worst run in its 40-year history."
U.K. stocks rose on Friday. The benchmark FTSE 100 Index gained 1.42 per cent, or 78.09 points, to 5,571.15. The FTSE All-Share Index rose 1.53%, or 43.45 points, to 2,891.45.
