The European Union has signaled a potential path to lift import suspensions on Brazilian poultry and honey following positive audit results regarding its strict food safety standards.
  • Audit and Compliance: A recent European Commission audit found Brazil's poultry and honey production systems compliant with EU rules banning the use of antimicrobials for animal growth promotion. 
  • Regulatory Decision: EU Trade and Economic Security Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič confirmed shipments could resume once administrative procedures conclude. A technical review is scheduled for the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food, and Feed on October 20–21.
  • Beef and Stricter Traceability: While Brazil has requested a similar expedited timeline for beef, the EU enforces stricter requirements requiring full lifecycle tracking (birth to slaughter) for livestock, creating a more complex timeline of up to two years.
  • Trade Context: The EU initially barred imports of Brazilian animal products on September 3 over antimicrobial compliance. In addition to agricultural standards, the bloc is currently reviewing its steel quota allocations, with further stages planned through 2027.
