Nikkei at 33-month high, consumer electronics led gains

Japanese stocks soared on Monday on surging consumer electronics companies. Moreover, strong Friday's performance of the Wall Street as well as upbeat US data spurred rally of Japanese equities. The Nikkei 225 Index climbed 0.62% to hit fresh 33-month high of 11,260.35. Seven out of ten industries within the index jumped. The top-performers were financials and consumer goods. Among lenders, Mizuho Financial Group Inc. and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. added 4.90% and 5.60%. Panasonic and Sharp led gains among consumer goods, advancing 16.89% and 4.47%. Panasonic swung to Q3 profit of JPY61.4 billion from a loss of JPY197.6 billion in the same period in 2011. At the same time, Sharp posted narrower quarterly loss last week. Sony Corp. climbed 7.53% on hopes the firm will unveil upbeat results on Thursday. The top-performer was Toyobo, rallying 34.35%. Dragging the Japanese blue chips index lower, utilities retreated 0.70%, with Tokyo Gas plunging 1.16%.
