U.S. CPI Inflation Accelerates to 4.2% in May on Rising Energy Costs

The U.S. inflation rate rose to 4.2% in May 2026, up from 3.8% in April, indicating that price growth accelerated over the past month. On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 0.5%, following a 0.6% increase in April.

The main driver of higher inflation was a sharp increase in energy prices. Energy costs rose 3.9% in May, while gasoline prices jumped 7.0% during the month. Compared with a year ago, gasoline prices are up 40.5% and overall energy prices have increased 23.5%. Food prices continued to rise but at a more modest pace. Overall food prices increased 0.2% in May, with grocery prices rising 0.1% and restaurant prices increasing 0.3%. Over the past year, food prices have risen 3.1%.



Excluding food and energy, so-called "core inflation" remained relatively stable. Core prices increased 0.2% in May and were 2.9% higher than a year earlier, suggesting that underlying inflation pressures were less severe than the headline number implies. Housing costs, which are a major component of inflation, increased 0.3% during the month. Airline fares, medical care, communication services, and recreation also became more expensive. Meanwhile, prices for motor vehicle insurance, household furnishings, and new vehicles declined.
