Job openings reported as expected

In June 2025, the number of job openings in the United States remained relatively unchanged at 7.4 million, with a job openings rate of 4.4 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. While the overall level stayed steady, there were notable shifts across sectors. Job openings declined significantly in accommodation and food services (down 308,000), health care and social assistance (down 244,000), and finance and insurance (down 142,000). In contrast, openings rose in retail trade (up 190,000), information (up 67,000), and state and local government education (up 61,000).



The number of hires was also little changed at 5.2 million, with a hiring rate of 3.3 percent. A small decline was reported in arts, entertainment, and recreation, which saw 42,000 fewer hires. Total separations, which include quits, layoffs, discharges, and other separations, remained steady at 5.1 million and a rate of 3.2 percent. Separations declined in state and local government education (down 39,000) and the federal government (down 20,000). Quits, a measure of workers' willingness or ability to voluntarily leave their jobs, stayed level at 3.1 million, with a quits rate of 2.0 percent. Quits declined in professional and business services (down 114,000), state and local government education (down 20,000), and the federal government (down 5,000). Layoffs and discharges were unchanged at 1.6 million and a rate of 1.0 percent. There were declines in arts, entertainment, and recreation (down 35,000) and state and local government education (down 19,000), while mining and logging saw a small increase (up 5,000). Other separations, including retirements, deaths, and internal transfers, were little changed at 314,000.
