ISM report on Manufacturing at 50.3%

U.S. manufacturing activity expanded slightly in February after 26 months of contraction, with the Manufacturing PMI® registering 50.3%, a slight drop from 50.9% in January. While the overall economy continued to expand, some key indices showed mixed results. The New Orders Index fell into contraction at 48.6%, and the Production Index showed marginal growth at 50.7%. The Prices Index surged to 62.4%, indicating rising prices, while the Employment Index dropped to 47.6%, signaling job cuts.

The Supplier Deliveries Index increased to 54.5%, showing slower deliveries, and the Inventories Index rose to 49.9%, indicating a slight recovery. The New Export Orders Index declined slightly to 51.4%, and Imports continued to expand at 52.6%.

Demand weakened as reflected by the contraction in new orders, although factory output remained stable. The Employment Index showed contraction as companies reduced staff. Tariffs were cited as a major factor behind rising prices and delivery delays, with spot commodity prices up by 20%.

Overall, 24% of manufacturing GDP contracted in February, down from 43% in January. Four of the six largest manufacturing industries showed growth, with Petroleum & Coal Products, Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products, Chemical Products, and Transportation Equipment expanding. Five industries, including Furniture, Textile Mills, and Computer & Electronic Products, reported contraction.

ISM services PMI at 53.5

The U.S. services sector continued its expansion for the eighth consecutive month in February, with the Services PMI® registering 53.5%, up from 52.8% in January. This indicates ongoing growth since the recovery from the pandemic-induced recession began in June 2020. The Business Activity Index was at 54.4%, slightly down from 54.5% in January, but marking the 57th month of expansion.
