Copper falls on high LME stocks, solid greenback

Industrial metals tanked on Wednesday as traders continued to monitor elevated stocks at LME warehouses. At the same time, hopes for easing in Japan as well as expectations that US lawmakers will reach a budget deal limited losses of the base metals.

Aluminum noted a decline, following softness in copper prices. Bloated LME inventories also added pressure on the light metal. Stocks climbed 36,050 tonnes on Tuesday, re-approaching a record of 5.2 million tonnes.

Copper slumped to more than one-week low after the data indicated that LME inventories soared to the highest level in nine months. LME stockpiles rose to 300,500 tonnes on Tuesday, while stocks at SHFE added 205,385 tonnes last week to reach a seven-month high.

Nickel declined amid high inventory levels at LME and rising exports from Indonesia. Solid US Dollar also pressurized the base metal.

Zinc edged lower after LME inventories added another 3,000 tonnes on Tuesday, attaining  17-year high.

Silver dips on US budget optimism

Precious metals except for palladium tumbled on Wednesday as hopes that US will manage to avert fiscal cliff continued to weight on the safe-haven assets. Solid US Dollar also added pressure on the commodity group.
