U.S. stocks gain on rallying retail and transportation companies

U.S. equities rallied on Tuesday, as an increase in retail and transportation firms offset rising concerns about raising the debt ceiling. The S&P 500 gained 0.1% to 1,472.34 after retreating 0.5% earlier in the session. Six out of ten groups in the benchmark gauge edged higher with consumer services jumping 0.55%, the most in the index. Dell Inc. capped further losses in technology shares that were –0.58% down. The computer maker surged 7.2% to $13.17, extending their gains for a second straight day as Dell said to be in buyout talks with at least two equity companies. Furthermore, Apollo Group added 5.4% to its shares, supporting the best-performing consumer services group, while Denbury Resources Inc., a company that explores and acquires oil and gas properties gained 5.21% to $17.76, adding to gains in the oil and gas sector that was 0.38% up. Meanwhile, Apple Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. lost 3.15% to $485.92 and 2.93% to $16.53, pacing losses in technology group. Fiserv paired second biggest decline in the index by dropping 2.9%.
