Rates in Europe are unchanged

The European Central Bank (ECB) has decided to keep its key interest rates unchanged, with the deposit rate at 2.00%, the main refinancing rate at 2.15%, and the marginal lending rate at 2.40%. This decision comes as inflation in the euro area has reached the ECB's medium-term target of 2%. Recent data supports the ECB's view that inflation is under control, with domestic price pressures easing and wages growing more slowly. The euro area economy has remained resilient despite a difficult global environment, including ongoing trade tensions. The ECB notes that uncertainty remains high and will continue to watch developments closely.



Going forward, the ECB will take a meeting-by-meeting approach and base its decisions on the latest economic and financial data, as well as how inflation is behaving. It is not committing to any specific path for interest rates. The ECB is also gradually reducing its asset holdings under the Asset Purchase Programme (APP) and the Pandemic Emergency Purchase Programme (PEPP), as it no longer reinvests proceeds from maturing bonds. The ECB says it is ready to adjust its tools if needed to keep inflation stable at 2% and ensure smooth transmission of its monetary policy across all eurozone countries. It also has a special tool, the Transmission Protection Instrument, to respond to market disruptions that threaten effective policy implementation
