Inflation in Australia rises

Australia's Monthly CPI Indicator for May 2025 shows that inflation rose 2.1% over the year, a slight easing from the 2.4% increase recorded in April. This suggests inflationary pressures are continuing to moderate across much of the economy. The main contributors to annual inflation were food and non-alcoholic beverages, which rose by 2.9%, housing at 2.0%, and alcohol and tobacco at 5.9%. Within food, fruit and vegetable prices rose 2.8%, a sharp drop from April's 6.1% rise. Prices for coffee, tea, and cocoa surged 8.3% due to higher global bean costs, while egg prices spiked 19.3% amid ongoing supply shortages. Tobacco prices climbed 11.5%, continuing a strong upward trend.



In housing, rents increased 4.5% over the year, the smallest growth since December 2022, reflecting stabilising rental markets. Electricity prices fell 5.9% year-on-year, thanks largely to Commonwealth and state government energy rebates. However, gas prices remained high, rising 6.5%. Transport costs dropped, with automotive fuel prices falling 10.0% annually and 2.9% during the month of May, driven by lower global oil prices. Underlying inflation also showed signs of easing. The CPI excluding volatile items and holiday travel rose 2.7% in the year to May, down slightly from April's 2.8%. The trimmed mean inflation, which smooths out irregular price movements, came in at 2.4%, down from 2.8% the previous month.
