UK Inflation Report: CPI and CPIH Rates Decelerate in April 2026

In April 2026, UK consumer price inflation saw a broad deceleration, with the Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) falling to 3.0% and the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) to 2.8%, down from 3.4% and 3.3% in March, respectively. The primary driver of this easing was a significant downward contribution from housing and household services, specifically electricity and gas, following adjustments to energy price caps and government policy measures to lower per-unit costs, alongside lower prices in recreation and culture linked to the timing of Easter.



These downward pressures were partially countered by rising transport costs, which saw motor fuel prices reach their highest annual increase since September 2022, as well as an upward tick in clothing and footwear prices. Furthermore, core inflation rates for both measures continued to moderate, reaching their lowest levels since 2021, while the UK's headline CPI rate notably dipped below Germany's flash estimate for the first time in over a year.
