Dow dropped; basic materials led losses

Dow slid on Monday amid lingering concerns over the Eurozone. Eurozone's finance ministers met to decide on Greek bailout installment on Monday. Adding to losses of the US blue chips, market players remained cautious ahead of US consumer confidence data and Ben Bernanke speech due on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index lost 0.33% to close at 12,967.37. Only two sectors included in the index rose. The only gainers were basic materials and industrials. EI du Pont de Nemours gained 0.53%, while Hewlett-Packard and Cisco Systems climbed 2.41% and 1.22%. On the downside, telecommunications and financials plunged 1.06% and 0.83%. AT&T and Verizon Communications slumped 1.08% and 1.05%, while American Express and Travelers Cos sank 1.45% and 0.58%. Oil and gas firms also were bearish, with Chevron and Exxon Mobil dropping 0.46% and 0.53% amid weaker crude oil prices.
