Consumer prices rise lower than expected

In April, U.S. consumer prices rose 0.2% after falling 0.1% in March, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Over the past 12 months, prices increased 2.3%.

The biggest contributor to April's rise was shelter, which increased 0.3%. Energy prices also rose 0.7%, driven by higher natural gas and electricity costs, despite a drop in gasoline prices. Food prices, however, fell 0.1%, with grocery prices down 0.4% and restaurant prices up 0.4%.

Price pressures intensified as the Prices Index jumped to 65.1%, marking the fifth straight month above 60%. The Inventories Index climbed to 53.4%, showing better stock levels, while the Backlog of Orders Index remained in contraction at 48%, a slight improvement from the previous month.



Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.2% in April. Items like household goods, medical care, insurance, education, and personal care went up, while airline fares, used cars, communication, and clothing prices fell.

Over the past year, core inflation rose 2.8%. Energy prices dropped 3.7%, and food prices rose 2.8%. April's 2.3% overall increase was the smallest yearly gain since February 2021.

ISM services above 50.0%

The U.S. services sector expanded for the 10th consecutive month in April, with the Services PMI® rising to 51.6%, up from 50.8% in March. The New Orders Index increased to 52.3%, indicating stronger demand, while the Business Activity Index dipped to 53.7% but remained in growth territory. The Employment Index stayed in contraction at 49%, though it improved from 46.2%
