On Wednesday, December 18, the House of Representatives impeached the US President Donald Trump.
The House voted 230-197 on Article 1: Abuse of power. The President was accused on using his presidency power for his own benefit. Also, the Article 2: Obstruction of Congress was passed 229 to 198, as Trump was accused of blocking the Congress's investigation. Note that Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard voted "present" on both charges.
Now the Senate has to hold a trial. The Democratic Senate minority leader Chuck Schummer requested that the trial had to start at the second week in January when the Senate would return from its winter break.
Some analysts predict that Donald Trump would not lose his position, as the majority of the Senate are Republicans. Also, no Republicans supported impeachment in the House.
Although Trump could be acquitted by the Senate, Democrats hope that this trial will be a black mark on his name, and voters will not re-elect Trump as the President in 2020. However, polls show that the nation's opinion have not change significantly due to the ongoing impeachment process.
