Nikkei down as U.S. manufacturing contracts and yen strengthens

Japanese stocks fell on Monday, as the U.S. manufacturing index decreased more than estimated and the yen strengthened. The Nikkei 225 Index lost 1.1%, or 131.59 points, to 12,003.43. Only 49 out of 225 companies included in the gauge posted gains and 2 out of 10 sectors advanced. Tokyo Tatemono Co Ltd, a real-estate and financial company, surged the most, adding 8.6% to 668 yen. JGC Corp, a Japanese global engineering company, jumped 7.4% to 2,523 yen, capping the further decrease in oil and gas sector. It was announced that the company will participate in building a gas-extraction complex in Yamal, Russia. Furthermore, Tokyo Dome Corp added 6.9% to trade at 526 yen. On the downside, Nippon Paper Industries Inc declined 8.4% to 1,324 yen during its first day of trading on Tokyo Stock Exchange. The company recently completed merger with Nippon Paper Group Inc. Tokuyama Corp followed with a 6.8% decline to close at 235 yen. Toho Zinc Co Ltd, a manufacturer of zinc related products, closed the top-three with a 5.6% plunge to finish at 351 yen.
