ISM Manufacturing PMI at 48.7

The August 2025 ISM Manufacturing PMI registered 48.7 percent, up slightly from 48.0 percent in July. This indicates that manufacturing activity continued to contract, but at a slower pace, while the overall U.S. economy remained in expansion for the sixty-fourth consecutive month.

New orders returned to growth at 51.4 percent after six straight months of contraction, signaling a potential turnaround in demand. However, production slipped back into contraction at 47.8 percent, and employment, at 43.8 percent, showed companies are still cautious about hiring. Supplier deliveries slowed with a reading of 51.3 percent, which often reflects improving demand. Inventories edged up to 49.4 percent but remained in contraction territory, while customer inventories stayed "too low," a sign that future production could strengthen. Prices continued to rise, though at a slightly slower pace, with a reading of 63.7 percent. Export orders and imports both contracted, at 47.6 percent and 46.0 percent respectively, reflecting continued weakness in global trade.



Industry performance was mixed. Seven industries, including textile mills, apparel and leather, nonmetallic mineral products, food and beverage, petroleum and coal products, miscellaneous manufacturing, and primary metals, reported growth. Ten industries, led by paper products, wood products, plastics and rubber, and transportation equipment, remained in contraction.
