The U.S. job market remained steady in April 2025, with job openings little changed at 7.4 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The hiring rate also showed minimal movement, staying at 5.6 million, while total separations were unchanged at 5.3 million.

Within job openings, declines were seen in accommodation and food services and in state and local government education. However, there were increases in arts, entertainment, recreation, and in mining and logging.

Hires remained steady across all industries. Total separations, which include quits, layoffs, and other departures, also showed little change. Quits held at 3.2 million, a 2.0% rate, though down 220,000 from the same time last year. Layoffs and discharges stood at 1.8 million, with increases in healthcare and social assistance, and decreases in some government sectors. Other separations were unchanged at 308,000. There was no notable change in job activity for the smallest and largest establishment size groups. Revisions to March data showed slight adjustments: job openings were revised up to 7.2 million, hires revised down to 5.4 million, and separations up to 5.2 million.
