Natural gas tanked on mild weather forecasts

Energy futures apart from natural gas witnessed mild gains on encouraging US durable goods orders data and escalated geopolitical tensions in Africa. Capping gains of the commodity complex, US Dollar climbed against its major peers ahead of the Fed monetary statement due on Wednesday.

Crude oil hovered near a four-month high after positive US data. Meanwhile, market players were cautious as experts predict the EIA report to show the second consecutive increase in the US crude oil inventories last week.

Brent oil found support on re-escalation of geopolitical tensions in Africa. Libya started to boost security at its oil facilities amid fears of Algerian attacks. Moreover, speculation that the physical market will not face surplus forecasted by OPEC lifted the commodity price.

Natural gas was the only loser, sagging more than 4% on warm weather forecasts. Updated weather forecasts pointed to mild weather in Mid-February in the most US territory, weighing on demand potential for the heating fuel.

Heating oil traded in tandem with crude and Brent oil. However, gains were cut by expectations of warm temperatures in the US.
