UK Retail Sales dive

Retail sales volumes in the UK saw a significant decline in May 2025, falling by 2.7% compared to the previous month. This marks a sharp reversal from the 1.3% increase recorded in April 2025, which was revised upward from an initial estimate of 1.2%. One of the key contributors to the decline was the drop in food store sales, which had seen a strong boost in April. Retailers largely attributed that earlier surge to good weather, which encouraged more consumer spending on food and related goods. However, this boost did not carry over into May, leading to a noticeable monthly drop.



Despite the fall in May, the broader picture over the quarter remains more positive. Sales volumes rose by 0.8% in the three months to May 2025 when compared with the three months to February 2025. This suggests that, while May was a weaker month, overall retail activity in the UK is still on an upward trend when viewed over a longer time frame. The data highlights the volatility of consumer spending, which can be influenced by short-term factors such as weather, holidays, or changes in economic sentiment. Retailers and analysts will be watching closely to see whether this downturn continues into June or proves to be a temporary correction after April's gains.
