Japanese stocks closed mixed on Monday.
The Nikkei 225 added 0.15%, or 12.76 points, to 8,593.15. The broader Topix erased 0.14%, or 1.00, to 721.11.
"Investors in the market cannot decide their positions because the Greek issue remains unpredictable in Europe," said Yoshihisa Okamoto, a fund manager at Mizuho Asset Management Co.
"The market doesn't think the BOJ will automatically expand its asset purchases, but many people want to sell shares and are using the remarks as a catalyst."
