"The [consumer sentiment] index shows that consumers are becoming increasingly pessimistic about their personal economic circumstances over the next twelve months"
- Nick Moon, GfK's head of social research
U.K. consumer confidence slid in March as consumers became less optimistic about the outlook of the country's economy, GfK NOP Ltd. data showed on Friday. An index of sentiment decreased to -31 from -29 points in February.
"These figures make depressing reading for the government, especially when you consider that the index has been mired within a couple of points of the present levels for the last nine months," said Nick Moon, GfK's head of social research.
"The index shows that consumers are becoming increasingly pessimistic about their personal economic circumstances over the next twelve months, a worrying sign for the already hard-pressed retail sector."
