The Nikkei 225 Stock Average gained 0.49 per cent, or 42.36 points, to 8,609.00. The broader Topix Index advanced 0.26 per cent, or 1.86, to 728.30.
"There is a strong political and financial will for the euro," said George Boubouras, Melbourne-based head of investment strategy at UBS AG's Australian unit.
"Actions that address the EU challenges will create the opportunity for a sustainable rally ahead."
