Excluding volatile food and energy components, the core CPI rose 0.3% in August after a 0.2% gain in July, while the annual core rate ticked down slightly to 2.4% from 2.5%. Upward pressure on core inflation stemmed from higher costs across shelter (+0.3%), communication (+2.3%), airline fares (+2.7%), and lodging away from home (+2.4%), alongside modest gains in both new and used vehicles. These increases were partially tempered by declines in medical care, dental services, and motor vehicle insurance, as well as flat readings in apparel and recreation.
