I have been searching the docs for something like IHistory.getCalendarMessages().
Is there any way in the API to access historical news messages?

No you only receive calendar events as they get fed and news as they happen.

The live JForex client is able to display historical news/calendar information from years ago (when I never ran it). How is this possible since the JForex Client is presumably built on the JForex API? Or does it make use of a separate news API?

You can cause Calendar/News feeding from SDK or platform and listen to the messages from the strategy, see:
https://www.dukascopy.com/wiki/#JForex_SDK/News_and_Calendar
Note that this will work only with live data and not in the historical tester.

Okay thanks. So is the only way to retrieve historical news from within a strategy, to start and stop an anonymous live strategy (to serve as a listener), from within the main strategy?
