PROUD TO BE FROM ALBANIA: A VISIT TO BUTRINTI

Hello ! I wasn't here for some days, my parents invited us to Ksamil, the place i wrote before to you...
I had a good time in Ksamil, and i enjoyed a lot those little vacations, but my prefered moment was when i visited BUTRINTI, is an ancient place about 2,500 years old, the most beautiful place when history and nature interlaces together..Butrint was announced city museum in June 1961 and regarded as immovable heritage of mankind and protected by UNESCO since 1992.
Butrint, the ancient name or Buthrotum, lies in southwest Albania, 20 km south of the modern port of Saranda. Its position is spectacular: the ancient city occupies the main part of the hill that Vivarit caught in the canal, a narrow road connects Corfu water today, 4 km west of Butrint, with internal lake of salty water. Foot of a plateau in the south of the canal lies a blasted wasteland that separates Butrint waters from a mountain range, which lies along the southern Albanian-Greek border.Riviera is without doubt one of the most beautiful and untouched throughout Albania. The Adriatic and Ionian have a striking beauty. Palms and olive trees dominate the landscape by making a typical Mediterranean charm.

Butrint in 2000 received more than 30,000 foreign visitors. The ancient city is undoubtedly one of the most valuable attractions of the Albanian Riviera and one of the destinations of stripes, not only by tourists but also by the Albanians

(Butrinti in ancient times )

I will write something about Butrinti , but if you want more info i recommend you to visit this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buthrotum

But how did Butrint survived for centuries?
Butrint is believed to have its beginnings in the 8th century BC, the setting where traders Corfu. This is the city that is more related to the legend of Aeneas. In the 4th century, Butrint was a kaoanian port, perhaps in the center of one of the tribes of Epirus helenase. Romans used the port as a base for their military campaign in the Balkans in the 2nd century. In the century that followed, he became a colony of the old soldiers of Julius Caesar. Later back to Roman rule, the city had its church in a visible place.

But in 551 was attacked by barbarians. The story that followed until the 10th century, as happened to many Mediterranean ports, remains a mystery. Later it became an important port for connecting Venice and Byzantium. For a long time in the Middle Ages, was in the hands of the Venetians, who protected the eastern boundary of the Corfu Channel. The city of Butrint is large and complex, with ruins from different periods. For those who are not specialists archaeologists and students, the easiest way to their first visit is to rotate within the perimeter. The walk around the walls and see with their own eyes that it was developed as a castle town and fortified island and then proceed towards the center to see ancient buildings finesse.

In the area can be accessed through a gate, which applies a very small fee. Taking to the right and follow the narrow alleys arrives in ruins belonging to the Roman bath and a Venetian tower and then another section of walls dating back to the fourth century, the year of Christ.

After almost 400 meters more, to show the ruins of a center of Christian worship and then a pool in the shape of a cross that may have been part of the medieval church.

To the right of the entrance you see a very nice view of the canal expansion then leads to the lake. Later still another section, too long outer walls, even those belonging to the late antiquity, and a walk in the dense forest in the north of the island is really very nice.

On the left, while approaching the end of this road, seen the walls of a medieval basilica near the point where the walls join the fortifications external connectors.

Now will begin our road trip with the help of mine little guideline...
