Italian shoes

In the 1950s, Italy meant glamour, Italian films, songs, haircuts, suits, dresses and shoes - particularly shoes - became must-haves. The Italian shoe designers began to sharpen their toes - first on women's stilettos, then on men's shoes. In Britain and Australia, they were called ''winkle-pickers'' because they were so sharp you could, metaphorically, use them to pick the flesh out of a periwinkle - a type of tiny shellfish. In the United states, they were called, less delicately, ''roach kickers''.The best were handmade in Italy, two-tone perhaps, or white with black laces, their length emphasised by the ankle-hugging trousers bottoms of the Italian suits with which they were worn. Buckles reappeared, sometimes two on each foot. The ultimate seal of approval came when a winkle-picker version of an elastic-sided, high-ankled boot of a type previously worn by horse-riders or maiden aunts became the chosen footwear of The Beatles. They became mandatory for a man of fashion.
